NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries are a great entry-level battery for those new to RC cars. NiMH batteries are cheaper and less complicated to charge and store than LiPo (Lithium Polymer) RC batteries. The downside to NiMH batteries is that they lose performance as they lose their charge. LiPo RC batteries are going to carry full power performance longer rather than dwindle during use. And the weight-to-power ratio in a LiPo battery is better than NiMH. This is why so many RC drivers like to upgrade from NiMH to LiPo as they get more into the hobby. RC car batteries that are included in many RTR (Ready-to-Run) vehicles will be NiMH simply because they are easier for beginners. The mAh is the capacity of your RC battery. You’ll want to make sure you’re buying an RC battery based on mAh in a size that fits your RC car or truck. The higher the mAh, the longer the run time. But you have to make sure you’re buying a battery your RC car can handle both electronically and physically. Your owner’s manual will fill you in on the details. Voltage is equally as important as mAh. It creates more power which translates into RPM. The wrong voltage of RC battery in your car or truck can be dangerous, so again, refer to the owner’s manual to determine the voltage size you can handle.
There’s a lot to consider when selecting your RC car battery. Look to your owner’s manual for guidance in selecting the right capacity and power. You’ll also want to double check the physical size of your battery to determine if it will fit or not. That larger capacity battery may look attractive, but it won’t work if it doesn’t fit inside your RC car.
