Founded on October 9, 1776, Mission San Francisco de Asis is 6th in the
mission chain and includes the oldest building in San Francisco city. Named for
St. Francis of Assisi, it is also referred to as Mission Dolores after the
nearby Lake Dolores.
Mission records indicate over 4000 Native Americans converted to
Christianity. Measles claimed thousands, however, and after 10 years only a few
A 1906 earthquake destroyed the huge basilica, but little Mission Dolores
remained unharmed. Today much of the original church interior is intact,
including fine examples of early California art. It is still an active church
and the original bells, all cast within five years of the church's completion,
are still rung during Holy Week.
