The origin of lowrider RC cars like those available from Tower Hobbies® dates to the mid-1940s, when full-size vehicles customized with lowered bodies began to appear on the streets of Los Angeles, California. Their owners cruised as slowly as possible (“Low and Slow” was their motto) to show off the intricate, colorful designs painted on their car bodies. Lowriders became known as works of art that represented each driver’s community, culture, and love for automobiles.
Another distinctive feature of the original, full-size lowriders was their adjustable suspension height. Custom-installed hydraulic or air bag systems allowed the vehicles to be raised or lowered at the driver’s command. Today, almost 75 years later, lowriders of many different vehicle makes and visual styles can still be found throughout the United States and in many other parts of the world.
For the same reasons that full-size auto enthusiasts are attracted to lowriders, the remote control car hobby has embraced them as well. Lowrider RC cars enable anyone to enjoy these vehicles’ classic styling, custom looks, and unique “hopping” performance. Redcat Racing is the first RC car manufacturer to offer fully functioning, ready-to-run (RTR) RC lowriders, including the 1/10 scale Redcat 64 Impala. You can find it here at Tower Hobbies.
Chevrolet unveiled its first Impala in 1958. The Impala introduced an X-shaped frame that was well-suited for lowering and outfitting with hydraulics. Redcat Racing engineers chose one of the first legendary muscle cars, the 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS, as the basis for its RC hopping lowrider. The Redcat Racing “SixtyFour” 1/10 scale 64 Impala measures 20.45” long and features an officially licensed, highly detailed 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS body. This ready-to-run lowrider RC car comes fully assembled and fully equipped. Only four “AA” batteries are required.
The Redcat “SixtyFour” 64 Impala RC lowrider car recreates every detail of the full-size vehicle with painstaking scale accuracy. Nearly two dozen molded, chrome-plated parts accent its impressive 1/10 scale body. The clear windows are trimmed with high-quality chrome foil. LED lights are also available as an option for nighttime cruising.
The attention to detail continues below the body, in the chassis frame, replica transmission, and functional solid rear axle with removable differential cover. As a result, the Redcat SixtyFour RC lowrider also drives like its inspiration, having been designed for slow cruising and to perform tricks possible only with a hydraulically activated suspension. Using a patented vehicle hopping system with specialty servos and a precise weight bias, it reproduces the driving style and real-time adjustable ride height of a full-size lowrider!
Tower Hobbies is also your source for the new 18.7” long Redcat Racing 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo lowrider RC car. Its licensed, 1/10 scale 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo three-piece body features painted side mirrors, clear windows, detailed interior, injection-molded chrome plastic details, chrome decals, and magnetic body mounts. Authentic low-profile whitewall tires on chrome wire spoke wheels take the realism to the ground. As with the 64 Impala, LED lights are available as an option.
The 79 Monte Carlo is the first Redcat Racing RC lowrider to use the LR260 chassis with solid rear axle and independent front suspension. The chassis includes a total of five servos, one for each of the four wheels plus one for steering. This exciting design allows drivers to raise and lower each of the wheels independently! The LR260 chassis also accepts hundreds of aftermarket bodies using included, optional body posts so you can cruise with your favorite look.
Factory assembled and finished, the ready-to-run 79 Monte Carlo comes equipped with a 6-channel LR6X radio system created specifically for use with RC lowriders. The transmitter has many lowrider style buttons, levers, and switches to perform realistic-looking lowrider tricks. Also included are a 7.2V NiMH battery and USB charger. Add 4 “AA” transmitter batteries and you’ll be ready to hit the streets!
