Founded in 1900, Lionel, LLC has a long history with model trains and is a brand that has been able to stay on the cutting edge of technology for more than 100 years. Lionel founder Joshua Lionel Cowen looked to the American symbol of progress, the train, and brought it into the homes of Americans be it in the living room or under the Christmas tree. Children and parents alike were in love with model trains as a cultural icon. It is a hobby that has been coming back to life in recent years and Lionel continues to be a trusted brand name in model trains.
Lionel O gauge trains have been a major player in their portfolio since 1915. Lionel also designs G gauge, S gauge, HO gauge, and “Imagineering” sizes of model trains and tracks. The O gauge track systems and trains are approximately 1/48th scale and measure 1.25” between the outer rails. These O gauge trains are classic Lionel designs and contain more detail than smaller train sets. They are a staple in the model train hobby. By comparison, S gauge train sets are approximately 1/64th scale and G gauge are approximately 1/24th scale. Lionel also works with popular brands to create train sets, locomotives, and rolling stock that bring popular culture to life. One such train set is the Polar Express line of Lionel products including trains, scenery, and figures to bring the story to life. Like the Polar Express train set, many of the brands Lionel works with look great under a Christmas tree. They can also showcase an era of trains in American history or bring a modern element to a train set.
