My Review for Phoenix Model Yak 54 Mk2 GP/EP/Gas A
Review by Phil D. on 12 Jan 2019review stating My Review for Phoenix Model Yak 54 Mk2 GP/EP/Gas A
Another great product from Phoenix Models. My setup is 5 x Futaba 9252 Digital Servos, Castle Creations 120 HV Speed controller, Scorpion SII-4035-250KV brushless motor, Spektrum AR 6200 6 Channel Receiver, Turnigy NanoTech 7.4V 3000mah Lipo receiver battery, Align RCE-B6X Regulator and a 16x10 Carbon Fibre Propeller. The airplane runs on 2 x 6S (12S) 3300 or 3700mah Lipo batteries. The build was very straight forward requiring no modifications to the airplane. I noticed a user complained about the pull/pull rudder snagging on the elevator horns. This only happens if you do not use the correct servo arm. This plane requires two inch servo arms for all the control surfaces. The standard servo arm will be too short and will not work properly. You will also need one servo reverser (placed on any one servo) for the elevator servos to move in the same direction. The maiden flight was very uneventful with only a few clicks of up elevator to have it flying straight and level. No aileron trim was needed. With the setup I have I get 6 minutes of flight time with unlimited vertical climbing power. The plane is extremely fast on 12S, tracks like it's on rails and handles the wind with no problem. Negatives: (1) The wheel pants are made of red plastic and the halves are not the same colour; I had to paint them over to get them to look consistent. (2) The battery tray is a bit flimsy and can break easily. (3) The recommended servo horn length of 2 inches should be included in the manual to help inexperience builders.

Review by Crash L. on 8 Nov 2017review stating The good, the bad, the unusual!
GOOD This is a beautiful model. The construction is solid with great reinforcement at the critical points around landing gear and elsewhere making to strong and a little heavy but not a problem with a 20 cc engine. The finishing is fantastic. The cowl and cockpit and canopy are especially nice. BAD The aileron servos and aileron horns are positioned in such a way that a 2" servo arm is required. This is bad design in my opinion. It will work that way but with less torque and precision than you could get from a 1" arm. I moved my aileron horn so I could use a 1" servo arm. The mounting hardware for the rudder pull-pull system in incredibly close to the elevator horns. Interference and catching of the cable is possible (and actually happened to me prior to flight).I shortened the rudder horns and tweaked the setup to make it work. Just be sure to check it out very well before flying. UNUSUAL The wing bolts provided were incredibly hard to turn into the matching wing nuts. After some investigation I found a simple 1/4-20 bolt fit perfectly so I bought some nylon ones from the hardware store and they work just fine. The provided ones must be out of spec or maybe even a close but not perfect metric thread. FLYING It flies and tracks well. The 20 cc is more than enough. I won't need to go much above have throttle. The balance point seems about right. The elevator has a tendency to be tipsy or sensitive around the level flight. Some added expo should help with that. OVERALL Nice model, excellent construction, needs a little more tweaking of the design to be perfect.

Review by Jgg70 on 19 Jun 2020review stating excellent to scale model
Upon receiving the model I was pleased with the packaging. All pieces were inspected and found to be in excellent shape. I am waiting for a wrap muffler to finish the build, it’s on order. I am anxious to put the Yak in the air, the build was “ok” but the manual is meant for experience modelers.

Very well built plane
Review by J.C. on 6 Apr 2020review stating Very well built plane
instructions are a little weak for example the manual did not make note of using the cowl mounts and how to install them.
