Constructed from 1972 to 1989, the SD40-2 was by far the most successful of EMD's “Dash 2” series of road switchers. More than 4000 were produced, mostly for use within North America, although they have also seen use in Australia, South America, and elsewhere internationally. Their ability to handle both road freight and local switching operations ensures that they remain an essential locomotive for most major freight railroads to this day.
