The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of stealth multirole fighters produced in three variants: the conventional F-35A used by the US Air Force, the short take-off and vertical landing F-35B, and the carrier-based F-35C used by the US Navy and Marine Corps. The United Kingdom selected the F-35B, which the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy operate jointly from land bases and from the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers, and has committed to acquiring 138 aircraft. The type is named Lightning after the Cold War-era English Electric Lightning and the Second World War Lockheed P-38 Lightning, making it the third RAF aircraft to carry the name. The first F-35A flew in December 2006.
