The Avro Lancaster was a four-engine heavy bomber that became the principal aircraft of RAF Bomber Command from 1942 until the end of the Second World War. Designed under Roy Chadwick and powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, it could carry a heavier bomb load than any other Allied bomber of the war, including the 12,000lb Tallboy and 22,000lb Grand Slam earthquake bombs. The Lancaster is best remembered for the Dambusters raid of May 1943, when aircraft of No.617 Squadron used Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb to breach dams in Germany's Ruhr valley.
