Surface Transmitters

Futaba surface radios or transmitters are also called "pistol-grip radios," as they are held similar to a pistol. They can easily be categorized by the numbers of channels they are capable of controlling. The most basic RC vehicles require 2 channels: one for steering and another for throttle. The number of channels they control are often stated in the name of the radio. Many RC vehicles require more than 2 channels. Some RC crawlers require an additional channel for the control of a winch or dig unit.

Surface Servos

A Futaba transmitter is the model’s brain. Futaba servos are its muscles. The motor shaft in a servo rotates, which moves a servo arm. The arm is connected by linkages to a function. Control input makes the servo arm move and perform the function. As a rule, each function requires its own servo. These may be analog or digital, and range in size from micro to “monster” types. Speeds, torque and features vary widely, depending on design and application.
